Annotation

Though there have been countless academic and journalistic books written about aspects of uncertainty and violence in contemporary Thai politics in the past decade, the topic is rarely touched upon in fiction writing, and even less so in graphic novels – possibly making Awakened the first of its kind. Written and published in Italian in 2019 and translated into Thai in 2020, it will be available in English next year. The book scrutinises the social, political and ideological crisis in Thailand through the tragic story of a motorcycle taxi driver in Bangkok (one of the writers, Claudio Sopranzetti’s, PhD thesis is on the role that Thai motorcycle taxi drivers play in daily life and their particular importance in the political protests of 2010). Self-censorship in the form of blocks of redacted text appears several times throughout the Thai version of the book, clearly to edit out references to the Thai monarchy (uncensored in the Italian version). This is a clear indication of the precarious situation and limited freedom of expression in a country that still has one of the most severe lèse-majesté laws in the world.

Narawan Kyo Pathomvat

He was blinded by a single bullet lodged in his skull, but he gained a new sight from the very same bullet. And when he awakened to the new sight, he saw that the country in which he lived was covered in darkness. There was no escape, no refuge, and no justice. There was no place for his faith. Everything that he once laid eyes on was but an illusion.

Asia’s Unknown Uprisings, Volume 2: People Power in the Philippines,Burma, Tibet, China, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand and Indonesia1947–2009
Directly democratic forms of decision-making and militant popular resistance are intimately woven together in these liberators movements. The conscious spontaneity and self-directed actions of hundreds of thousands - sometimes millions - of people, is nourished by communities of struggle. People’s self-organization is confined within a grammar of autonomy, solidarity, and decommodification. Histories of struggles on various continents and in different countries may seem juxtaposed across unbridgeable divides, but they nonetheless hang together in these qualities and in the connections forged by people as they struggle for peace and justice.

What is a space but politics?
Situated in downtown Bangkok, one climbs up three flights of stairs before discovering a room filled with books. These are stacked in piles on a large wooden table located at the center, lined neatly on a large rack close to the entrance, stuffed into wooden niches along the walls. The books range from critical theory to art and design, social sciences to literature, film to philosophy. The selection is eclectic as well as idiosyncratic, often centered on the taste and discernment of its founder and owner, Narawan Pathomwat. But it also in many ways rejects her politics.

One of its main obligations is a direct response to the severe socio-political climate in Thailand, especially the realisation that there is a lack of public and independent space in the country. Therefore, it has focused on providing an open space for broader public discourse through diverse programmes, including seminars, lectures, screenings, workshops, and politico-cultural projects, to create dialogue and discussion among people from various fields of knowledge and communities in Thailand.
