On Friday, 16 November, we publicly announced the ten shortlisted projects for the 2019 Visible Award, after two days of intense work with the selection committee at LaFayette Anticipations in Paris. Following the announcement, we held the first Visible Award Public Assembly to start meeting with the many friends and colleagues in Paris introduce the ten shortlisted projects, and start the conversation around the Temporary Parliament that will take place in November 2019.

As a jury, we were very impressed by all the 67 projects nominated by 33 of our curatorial colleagues. Its depth and quality made for an interesting and lively discussion of the relative merits of many good projects. We selected 10 shortlisted projects that all precisely address the Visible Award criteria and have already demonstrated an ability to connect the field of art to emancipatory social change. The 10 projects also serve as a good representation of the
dominant interests of the whole long list, which was remarkable for its focus on sustainable and experimental agriculture, interventions in educational and juridical processes and long-term institutional development. We are already anticipating with excitement the coming Visible Award Temporary Parliament where the 10 projects will be publicly assessed and a winner announced.

Charles Esche, Gabi Ngcobo, and Xiaoyu Weng

We are looking forward to continuing the conversation with the guests who generously shared some of their time and opinions with us during the public assembly, and to welcoming them again at the events that we have in store for 2019.

Carved to Flow
The work consists of performance, installation, enterprise and charitable work. At documenta14 in Athens, where it was first presented, it took the form of a soapmaking laboratory installation. In Kassel, it transformed into a sculptural installation composed of a soap I made called O8 Black Stone that was disseminated and sold through performances.

Blank Noise
Blank Noise is working on attitudes that connect spaces and geographies of violence; and victim blame. Most women, girls, in India and beyond, have been raised in an environment that warns them to, ‘be careful’, to ‘protect yourself ’, to not draw attention to yourself. This translates to: ‘If you’ve experienced sexual violence, you weren’t careful enough and you deserve it.’ As a result, most experiences of sexual violence are silenced, due to the fear of being blamed. An environment of victim blame justifies and perpetuates sexual violence.

Climavore: On Tidal Zones
Climavore: explores how to eat as climate changes. It is a long-term project with site-specific interventions that use food as a tool to address environmental degradation. Different from carnivore, omnivore, locavore, vegetarian, or vegan diets, Climavore is a form of devouring that reacts to anthropogenic landscapes and uses ingredients as infrastructural responses to man-induced climatic events.

Climavore: On Tidal Zones
The art collaborative Cooking Sections went to the Isle of Skye to see the work of the fish farming factories there and, in reaction to the horrors they found, to imagine a different relation between people and food. Rather than merely offering something to look at, they began a practice combining observation and eating.

A Thousand Miles Begins with a Single Step: Luke Ching and the Alternative Labour Movement
To address inequality and lead to action for change, workers have to know how to speak out for themselves. In traditional labour movements, workers use labour unrest; strikes and other forms of labour action are well developed in labour relations. In Hong Kong’s case, grassroots workers are in a vulnerable position. The precarious nature of contract-based jobs prevents them from taking collective action to protect themselves.
