About the project

Within the context of ‘rethinking space’ and a near absence of experimental and accessible platforms for contemporary art discourse in our communities in Nigeria, MMMoCA (Molue Mobile Museum of Contemporary Art) provides a vital platform for interdisciplinary contemporary art practice. It also strengthens professional collaboration and networking among artists and other art institutions across the West-Africa sub region. MMMoCA (a remodelled, yellow painted Lagos city commuter bus) is fitted with solar panels for an independent power source and contains a small art library. MMMoCA serves as a platform for a variety of events ranging from art exhibitions, screenings, performances, discussion sessions and workshops.

Our methodology is hinged on local community/citizen participation and on-site interventions. It orientates attention not just on production but towards relationships. This is evident in our exhibitions and activities: Witness interrogated, through music and performances, stereotypes of our urban environment. Going places travelled with Lagos Photo to the Fondation Zinsou in Cotonou, Benin republic and to the Ake book fair in Abeokuta where young writers took part in presentations and readings. We have an ongoing programme of screenings of short films and performances in public schools. Our latest programme, TalkYaMind, used music, interviews and art to interrogate the cynicism of the current democratic spring in Africa. Participating artists include Jude Anogwih, Ikongio Jeremiah, Folakunle Oshun, Ayodele Arigbabu, Oyindamola Fakeye, Olubela Atilola and Tito Aderemi-Ibitola.

The principal partner of MMMoCA is Goethe Institut Nigeria.
