In this collective process we integrate artistic research, work on the imaginary, narration and representation, with agroecological, economic and social actions. What I am experimenting with is the role of the artist who works with his own tools within the real processes of transformation. And because I believe in the potential of art as an engine of change, it is important that it be practiced in relationship.

Luigi Coppola

Casa delle Agriculture (Castiglione d’Otranto, Lecce) is a voluntary organization active in defence of agro-biodiversity, inclusive practices and experimenting with new models of “restanza” in marginal territories. It has been operating since 2012 with the objectives of reviving abandoned land, repopulating the countryside, generating a sustainable economy and strengthening community ties. Among the cultural activities organized, the Notte Verde Festival: Agriculture, Utopias and Communities has become an essential appointment for those interested in sustainable agriculture practices, ecological conversion and models of rethinking the countryside.

The Visible fellowship contributes towards the project Vivaio dell’Inclusione (Inclusive Plant Nursery), which has amongst its aims: to tackle involuntary loneliness, especially in the elderly population, through participation; to support activities with vulnerable groups; to promote and protect the environment. The Vivaio dell’Inclusione will be a community laboratory for the production, selection and conservation of seeds and mother plants of local vegetables (e.g. cabbage, fennel, tomatoes, courgettes, aubergines, etc.) and minor fruits to protect genetic resources and the rights of farmers. In the coming months together with groups of elderly people and migrants after specific training, plants at risk of extinction will be catalogued and reproduced, in order to increase biodiversity; a library of seeds will be set up; a small greenhouse will be built; ethnobotanical cuisine and bread-making workshops will be launched.

Sakiya – Art / Science / Agriculture
In search of an antidote to the neoliberal, alienating consumerist culture sweeping Palestine’s cities and the increasing number of disenfranchised youth in our refugee camps and rural areas, Nida Sinnokrot, along with architect Sahar Qawasmi, established Sakiya – Art/Science/Agriculture, a nomadic international, interdisciplinary residency programme with a mandate to bridge fading local traditions of self-sufficiency

Chozos de pastor
The project involves the reconstruction of a ‘chozo’ and its subsequent conversion into a landscape observatory, using the logic of the camera obscura. Chozos are refuges built by nomadic shepherds in common land across rural Spain. Farmers, hunters, and shepherds used them to protect themselves from weather adversities, but after the industrialization of the countryside,

Cooking Section: Climavore
Salmon evolved long before homo sapiens. From their position below the water they have observed the full timeline of human history. Across plural, distinct worlds; from Indigenous Peoples in places known as Canada and Alaska, to rural communities formed around rivers in Northern Europe; Salmon hold cultural significance, shaping the lives and communities that have been built.

An inquiry into the Keywords Laboratory through the lens of Social Botany – Land and Turf.
This project starts with the Tanka community but extends to examine the land ownership and use rights in our current global context, its historical genealogy, and the capitalist condition. Another important attempt of my work is to explore and reconstruct certain conditions and experiences prior to modernity and modernism. On the one hand, the disappearing of traditional modes of living, including its habitat and culture (such as music, boat building technics, etc.) is certainly a result of the modernization China is undertaking.

Potatoes’ Perspective
The Potatoes’ Perspective departs from the exhausted soils of monoculture farm fields in a depopulated rural community of Sweden, for the reconnection to healing and nurturing practices across species and disciplines. The potato has become a cheap staple for global fast food chains and the processing industry, at the same time as it safeguards subsistence

Organizing New Forms of Collectivity
As the political situation in Russia now dictates instability for all the projects supported by any kind of foreign NGO’s (see the foreign agent- and undesired organizations - recently applied laws) - the School of Engaged Art’s future is more than uncertain. This award would help us to create a more stable and sustainable ground and buy us some more precious time to co-create a visible community of activists, artists, thinkers and doers in our town and beyond.

Otobong Nkanga’s Carved to Flow
The strength of this project lies in the creation of horizontal, rhizomatic spaces, both in the artworld and in the rural and economic system. These spaces, set in two fragile areas like Akwa Ibom and Athens, welcome people affected by the effects of our capitalist society.
